Hello! Well, life abundant is happening, everyday. He promised and is not slack in His promises. With this amazingly packed summer, I find myself sitting down tonight with my next blog due in the morning. So not my typical MO; nevertheless, here we are so here we go.
As blog time approaches, I ask Him what He would like to talk about /share. Last night I as readied for bed I heard “Grace and Truth,” and saw the verse in John 1:17:
For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Just as we earlier touched upon the coupling of peace and joy in the last blog, we once again find two words coupled together in scripture – multiple times – in both the Old and New Testaments.
In the Old Testament, the Hebrew words – transliterated – are “checed”(grace) and “emeth” (and truth). Pronounced: “He.sed and eh’meth”
Checed is translated into English with several different words, including: grace, goodness, kindness, mercy, lovingkindness.
Eh-meth is translated as truth and faithfulness. (and other words, as well)
I encourage you to look at the various translations of Psalm 89:14. “He.sed and eh’meth” are found in this verse, together. They are translated variously as “love and faithfulness,” “Unfailing love and truth,” “steadfast love and faithfulness.”
Proverbs 20:28 reads (in the Berean translation): Loving devotion and faithfulness preserve a king; by these he maintains his throne.
“Loving devotion and faithfulness” are “He.sed and eh’meth.”
Psalm 25:10: (NASB 1995): All the paths of the LORD are lovingkindness and truth to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies. (italice added for emphasis)
Proverbs 16:6: (KJV): By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil. (italics added for emphasis)
This is by no means and exhaustive list for the translations of these two words, or the scriptures in which we find them. The above is meant as an introduction and to encourage you to explore these further. The online resources like Bible Hub and Blue Letter Bible (just to name a couple) are quite helpful in word exploration.
Next blog I want to look further into John’s intentional word choice in John 1:17, “grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
Until then, have fun exploring these words! I am confident Jesus will reveal greater depth to you in the journey.
