A Blog of Context

Feel Encouraged. Feel Inspired. Feel God’s Love.

Choice

Before we explore the gift of free will and our privilege of choice, we need to establish some context. In the last blog I suggested that the work of a child of God is to believe. In John 6 Jesus is talking with his disciples. They just witnessed Him feed 5 thousand people with a few loaves and a couple of fish. They ask Him, “what must we do to perform the works of God?” His response to them was not,  “obey the 10 commandments.” He did not tell them make sacrifices at the temple, or keep...

“Growing Up”

Knowing the end from the beginning, God knew what mankind would do before He created them. This did not deter Him from choosing humans as His heirs. Therefore, from before the foundations of the world, He made a covenant with Himself (God the Father with God the Son) to rescue mankind from their disobedience. (Revelation 13:8; 1 Peter 1:19) Through Jesus, we have the Way of reconciliation back to the original intent of relationship between God the Father and humanity. When we are rescued from...

“Systems & Schemes”

I recently listened to an interview with Dr. Carolyn Leaf (a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist) in which she spoke about the importance of our mindset.  One particular quote riveted my attention. She stated, “As you think, feel and choose, your brain changes in response to your mind.”  In my last blog post I touched upon the human mindset and its governing how we view God and how we view ourselves - ultimately our identity.   The vastly far reaching...

Relationship: The Original Intent

Let’s look in some detail at the intended relationship between God and mankind.  The context of this loving relationship is that of a Father and a son, a parent and a child. Ephesians 1:5 (NASB) states, “He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will.” Luke chapter 3 – the genealogy of Jesus – describes Adam as the “son of God.” In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve enjoyed daily fellowship with their heavenly Father....

In Our Image

In “The Arena” blog we looked at the context for the creation of the heavens and the earth, and I offered that in this creation, God prepared a dwelling place perfectly suitable for His children. Further, I shared my belief that Love is understood by experience. Therefore, Love must be demonstrated.  So, God chose to create recipients for His Love; ones He could share His Love with and demonstrate His Love through. In all of creation, including angels, He chose humanity to be the relational...

“The Arena”

At the end of my introductory blog, I suggested that we next explore the sources / inputs in our thought life. However, as I sit to write this blog I believe that before we look in more detail at thought life, we should continue developing context in a broad, foundational sense. Earlier, I shared Webster’s definition of context, as follows: 2. the whole situation, background, or environment relevant to a particular event, personality, creation, etc.  I also suggested that our viewpoint –...

An Introduction…

When my niece was three years old, she and her family traveled to visit her grandparents. During this visit, her mother shared with her that she would get to visit Palo Duro Canyon. Curious, she asked her mother, “What is a canyon?” Her mother described this geographical phenomenon as “a big hole in the ground.” The morning arrived for this excursion, and as we helped her get ready, we encouraged her with the anticipation of the adventure and some of what she might see. At the state park...
